Curriculum

Early Year Curriculum

In Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception, the curriculum focuses on seven areas of learning:

 Communication and language development involves giving children opportunities to speak and listen in a range of situations and to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves.

 Physical development involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive, and to develop their coordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

 Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

 Literacy development involves encouraging children to read and write, both through listening to others reading, and being encouraged to begin to read and write themselves. Children must be given access to a wider range of reading materials – books, poems, and other written materials, to ignite their interest.

 Mathematics development involves providing children with opportunities to practice and improve their skills in counting numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems, and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.

 Understanding of the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

 Expressive arts and design involves supporting children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role play, and design and technology.

Students in Reception and also have Thai Language and Culture lessons.

Primary Curriculum

The core subjects, Maths and English are taught in the first two lessons of each morning. (8:15 - 9:15 and 9:15 - 10:15). These lessons follow the objectives set out in the English National Curriculum and tailored to our context by our Maths and English coordinators to ensure continuity through the years, and progression from one term to the next and one year to the next.

Learning technologies, such as iPads, laptops and the computer labs are used to help support learning and teaching across all subjects. The skills needed to utilise these resources are taught through our topic work. In addition to these skills the students are also taught how computers work, and how we can program them, through Computing lessons.

The following subjects are taught by subject specialists
  • Mandarin (From Year 3)
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Swimming
  • Thai or Thai as a Foreign Language (TFL)
  • English Language Support (ELS) if required

The children’s learning is assessed continually to ensure their learning needs are met, and summative assessments are made at the end of each term in Maths and English to ensure progress has been made and to help identify any areas in specific need of attention. The results of assessments are reported to parents in written reports at the end of Term 1 and Term 3.

Secondary Curriculum

In order to develop our students into independent, self-motivated, lifelong learners who are admitted to the university of their choice, we have developed a broad-based curriculum that encourages creativity and critical thinking. No matter what area your child is interested in specialising in, we provide a range of opportunities for them to realise their goals.

In Years 7-9 students follow a broad and balanced curriculum specifically designed to meet the needs of students studying in Thailand. It will develop their curiosity, a love of learning and their willingness to take risks. It culminates in the Cambridge Checkpoint exams in Year 9 and provides the foundations for further exam success in IGCSE’s in Years 10 & 11. The final two years at Charter are more specialised and allow for the in-depth study of up to 4 subjects at A Level, ensuring students are excellently prepared for further study at university.

Throughout their time with us students will develop their ability to confidently communicate in different ways, to different audiences and in different languages. Additional English support is available to those who require it.

We are very proud of our pastoral system. Each student is assigned to a Homeroom group. Our enviable teacher:student ratio means Homeroom teachers get to know each member of their group personally. They give individualised advice and support allowing all our students to flourish and have the confidence to succeed in the different areas of their lives. In the upper years this support includes university guidance, which, again, is carefully tailored to the individual’s needs, includes many opportunities to meet with representatives from a range of universities around the world and help with applying to universities and colleges.

Although important, academic achievements are not all that our students are about. They are actively encouraged to become open-minded global citizens who appreciate different points of view, value their own culture and are aware of, and sensitive to, the cultures of others. All students in Years 7-9 follow a Global Perspectives course which develops their understanding of the world around them. Furthermore, a range of activities outside of class challenges students to think critically about the world and the societies they live in and their ability to be a force for good.

We expect all students to challenge themselves in all that they do and to have and meet the highest expectations. They are actively encouraged to experience new things, to take a pride in all that they attempt and to not give up when they meet an obstacle. These traits can be learnt in the classroom, on the sports field, on stage in musicals, or as solo musicians or through the International Award to name a few of the many opportunities Charter students have.
